Want to get a better mix by this weekend?
Don’t want to have to upgrade your plugins, DAW, or studio monitors?
I’ve got you covered my friend.
There are 3 things you can start doing on your mixes starting TODAY that virtually guarantee you a better mix…and all with the gear you already have!
They don’t take time to learn, develop, or implement. They simply work.

Very, very simple steps…and so true! I’ve been mixing for years and periodically I must remind myself to step back, regroup, go through these three steps in order to get a dose of reality check. Trust me folks it helps! Thanks again Graham!
Peace my brother,
😉
I’ve learned these three steps already. The hard way and later confirmed by Graham…
However, it would be great if I could replay this video at least once a month so I would not forget and resume bad habits…
Thanks Graham.
Haha. Set a reminder 🙂
Honestly, Graham, I have never in my long life looked forward to being taught technicalities, because I usually feel like I’m from another planet and the teacher is using an alien language. (-:
I always feel good when I watch your vids, or read your tutorials and I always come away educated, enthusiastic and motivated to put your advice into practice. AND.. it works every time. Also, I don’t feel like I am being pressured, or sold something which, 99% of the time we all are.
You’re one helluva teacher with the passion and intelligence to help others; a rare talent.
Thank you. John
Wow – thanks John!
I second John Howarth’s reply.
I don’t know him, but cannot say the same thing to you more succinctly.
I have been at this since 1971 and have never seen anything like it.
You are a real light of gracious generosity.
Thanks so very much Thomas! Humbled.
Graham,
You mentioned “A Perfect Circle” in your video. I checked them out. Demonic trash. Not good for the soul
Probably your best video ever. Excellent Graham, been following your vids for a long time. Taking breaks and using ref tracks great but a new idea to me to listen at sub levels. So important to be reminded of these things and learn new ones!
Thanks Michael! Glad it helped.
I no longer use an analog mixer in my setup, just a UA Apollo. So if youre all digital like me, and use plugins on the Mix Bus, then I suggest assigning the Output of all your tracks to a single Bus channel, and creating a Sub Mix track, assign it to the main outs, and put your previously mentioned Mix Bus plugins onto the Sub Mix channel. This way, the Mix Bus is free from plugins.
Then you can bring any Reference track into the DAW, assign it to the main output, and truly A/B it against your mix without having it affected by any Mix Bus plugins. This also makes it way easier to just Solo/Mute the Reference track to instantly check it against your mix without bypassing any plugins on the Mix Bus.
Logic users might also want to utilize the Match EQ feature on their Reference tracks to capture any subtle eq nuances within a mastered track and use that info to get closer with the eq on your Sub Mix.
Right on Jimmy,
I do the same, and it’s simple just to keep the reference track muted, then click it’s solo button to listen back and forth.
Thank you Graham, all is like you say. And thank you Jimmy, great idea.
Excellent stuff
Hello! I just had a question that isn’t super related to this video… Hee hee…
So, I’m just starting out with recording, and the style of music I do is pretty much just soundtrack covers or Celtic music. Lots of acoustic instruments, but I’m mainly using the keyboard for my instruments. I’ve been fiddling with Garageband for a long while now, but I also (thanks to this blog) heard about the free version of Pro Tools. I was wondering which one is better as far as the amount and variety of especially acoustic instrument sound effects? I want to make sure as I’m learning how to do this I’m using the right DAW. Thanks so much for this website!! It is such a blessing!!! 🙂
If you like Garageband then stick with that. It’s a pretty powerful program. You can always upgrade to its big brother, Logic Pro X.
Oops. I wonder if I just asked that twice… *facepalm* The computer is flipping out on me.
