As you begin wrapping up your mix, your goal is to keep transitions from section to section (verse to chorus to bridge, etc) as smooth as possible. If each part of a song is mixed well but there are abrupt changes from section to section then you’re not quite done with the mix.
The Cymbals Push You Forward
One of the simplest and fastest ways I know to get a nice transition into an otherwise abrupt downbeat is to use a cymbal swell. This can either be a recording or sample of cymbal roll, or a simple crash cymbal that’s been reversed in your audio editor. Enjoy the video!
That was awesome, it really brings a movement sensation to the song
A while back, Joe Gilder over a homestudiocorner.com gave away a bunch of nice cymbal swells
Would you care to share those cymbal swells, John?
What do you think about pasting that cymbal crash twice, reversing the first, and pasting them back to back so you get a waveform more like the actual cymbal swell? Obviously this would require some precision cutting, but I think it could work nicely.
Great idea. It just depends if you want a natural fade out or an abrupt swell. Totally works!
I do it with a delay that’s fitting to the song/mix on the ending of the reverse cymbal. It sounds closer to a natural decay to me that way.
I saw that pan outside of LCR!! JP, absolutely love the video series, thank you for doin this.
