If you are a music creator, you have a gift that needs sharing.
In reality your gift of music is a two directional gift. On the one hand, I believe the sheer fact that you have any musical talent, aptitude, or creative ideas is a pure gift from God. It did not originate with you. It was given to you.
Clearly not everyone is given this gift of music.
On the other hand the musical talent and inspiration wasn’t given just for you to have and to keep. It was given so that you might give it out; that you might share it with others.
So if music is given TO you, and it’s best enjoyed when it flows OUT of you into the lives of others – then doesn’t that make you some kind of musical conduit or channel?
I believe there is much joy to be found in embracing this concept.

Don’t Wait Until Your Music Is Perfect
The point I’m trying to make today is simple; don’t wait until your music is perfect before you share it with others.
Don’t wait until you’ve written the best song, or recorded the perfect vocal, or mixed the perfect track. If you do – you’ll never actually release anything, because no one can create a perfect piece of art.
Great music is human. It’s flawed. It ebbs and flows. It affects you at a deep level. It isn’t a perfectly calculated and manufactured thing. So it’s OK to be real about your messy music and share it anyway.
You see, too many of us made too little music this year.
We had high hopes, but in the end we never had the time to perfect our song or album. In reality, chances are good that we COULD have released more music had we simply embraced more human and realistic expectations for our music.
Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not an advocate for making bad or sloppy music.
Rather I’m an advocate for embracing our musical messiness and imperfections and sharing the best of what we have to offer in spite of it all.
Be A Giver, Not A Hoarder
If you’ve been given a song idea, or a track to mix, then stop hoarding it. Don’t let the flow of music find it’s dead end with you. Have some guts and some generosity and share what you have with the world, even if you’re scared to do it.
Giving is a major theme this week with the Christmas holiday a few days away. And the very inception of Christmas was founded on a single gift: the gift of freedom and forgiveness through Jesus’ birth (and eventual perfect life, death, and resurrection) 2,000 years ago.
And it was a messy gift.
The dude was a king and yet he was born in an animal barn on the outskirts of a humble town to a couple of average hardworking parents. Nothing fancy, perfect, or put together about the entire thing. In fact, Jesus’ birth (and life) was disappointing to many of those who anticipated his coming for years.
But it was a gift that was needed, and it was given. It wasn’t held back.
And when Christmas rolls around I can’t help but think about how powerful giving is. How much others might benefit if we were less inclined to hold back and perfect things, and more ready to share as we go.
Start Where You Are
People need your music. They might not know it, but they do.
Music is a gift to those who hear it. And if you are blessed to be a music creator, then finish the circle of gift giving, and share that music with someone. Don’t let it die with you and your super high level of expectations.
Pass it out, and move on to your next musical creation. This one might not be perfect, but it’s a start and you can only start where you are.
So this Christmas (whether you celebrate the actual holiday or not) and in the coming year, think about the concept of giving and how your music plays a part in that.
What song or songs are you holding back that you might need to simply call “done” and share with your friends and family in the coming weeks?
What expectations are you holding your music to that are actually prohibiting you from completing the cycle of giving I mentioned above?
How can you have more freedom and joy in your music making as you embrace the gift you’ve been given and more readily share it with others?
[Merry Christmas everyone. I’ll see you in two weeks as I’m taking some time off of writing and video making to rest and celebrate with my family. Thanks for being a part of this “revolution”!]
Graham……thanks for writing this. Thanks for your great inspiration, ideas and teaching. Thanks also for being bold to share the Good News of the Gospel. I appreciate that. I’m a Christian, a studio producer/ musician and full time in singing Gospel music.
Your teaching has helped me transition smoothly from a Roland 2480 (that I knew inside and out) to Protools and computer based recording. I’ve spent hundreds of hours with your free and purchased material. And I will be buying even more.
God bless.
Thanks so much Mark.
Thanks Graham. This is very encouraging article.
I’m currently trying to write EP #2, and I needed to read this.
Merry Christmas to you too!
Graham,
Thank you so much for posting this. I’m a student studying to become a worship leader, but have a love for recording music. It’s been on my heart this year (and with little money to give big gifts) to give my gift of music to my growing family. I’m recording as many favorite songs of members of my family and giving them all a taste of music for my gift. I wanted to thank you for your teaching because I would never be able to do it without your encouragement and wisdom!
Merry Christmas!
Joel Hitchcock
Thanks for sharing your inspiration and help !free! for us home recording enthusiasts who sometimes need a little push.
I needed to hear this.
Well, this is just what I needed to hear. My plan during my Christmas vacation was to finish recording an album I’ve been delaying for a long time now. I’ve definitely been selfish and holding back out of fear. Thanks for the extra kick in the butt. I will be reading this article more than once. Have a very merry Christmas!
Wow. Thanks. I’m just gearing up to release some music, and this is what I needed to hear.
Thanks so much for everything, Graham! Have a wonderful holiday, enjoy the days getting longer, and see if you can’t find a single good Chanukah song for all of us Hebrews and Shebrews out here. We’re starving – 75 years ago, all the Jews (in their financial wisdom) wrote radio christmas songs!!
Anyway, spot on. I tried to keep up with you album writing/recording/mixing months, and fell so far behind I gave up. This next year I can release 4 albums, I’m certain. Thanks for all of the encouraging words!! What YOU have is a true gift, and you share it with so many almost every day. Thank you, and God Bless!
It’s up to you Jamie! Write the next great one!
We actually just finished our second Christmas EP. We did 5 songs that were arranged, tracked, edited, mixed and mastered in a 4 week period. In between work and family time, this was stressful, but the short deadline made us really get on it. As stressful as it may have been, I’m proud of how it turned out 🙂

Hey Corey, Mark here!
Man I checked out your EP, man I´m very surprised about how good, profesional, well balanced and beautifull it sounds! Love the way your acustic guitars and vocals sound, listening The Herald Angels Sing, the music sounds to me like and ABBA song, sounds very warm, and clear, sounds so great! but my favorites are You´re A Mean One, and Mary did you know! great vocals and acustic guitars!
Did you recorded and mix your EP?
Congratulations, you have done a fantastic job!
Mark,
Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback! We did everything in my home studio. I tracked all the instruments, as well as all the male vocal parts, and my wife recorded the lead female vocal parts, as well as providing invaluable feedback on my mixes 😉
The guitar I used was an Alvarez Masterworks, recorded by a Studio Projects B3 condenser, into a Golden Age Pre 73. My wife tracked her vocals into a MXR 144 ribbon mic into the same Pre 73.
I’ve learned so much from Graham, and I would dare say a large majority of the techniques I used to track our EP I learned from him! Thanks, Graham!
Great, you have done a fantastic job! Both of you have very beautiful voices, and I think the tracking session was so crucial for your EP to sound so good. Congratulations again great songs!
Merry Christmas Graham! Thanks for all you do – you’ve been a true inspiration to me. Now go and take some time off and relax with your family.
Thanks Adam. I sure did these past two weeks.
Wow, very inspiring!
Thank you Graham for sharing your gift of music and coaching. I read your blogs and have purchased some of your great training tutorials and EPs. You’ve encouraged me to give my best and always seek to get better, and to share during the process.
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Dustin
Thanks a lot Dustin. Appreciate your support.
Thanks for such a great blog post Graham… and for your courage in sharing the Gospel in a relevant way. May God bless you and your family.

Same to you Kevin.
Graham, I’m the perfect example of what you are saying.
Today, I turned 40 and I’ve been playing guitar and writing songs and lyrics since I started at 15. I’ve been creating music for 25 years and you know what ? Not a single song I created was given away, not even the lyrics of one (even if I do have something interesting to say).
Why ?
I was looking for the perfect timing, the perfect moment, the perfect musicians, I was even waiting to play perfectly (or at least, what I wanted to be as a guitar player). But I barely recorded 20 songs in 25 years, I did collaborate with others, but I didn’t do any album of my own…
And so many people told me exactly what you are telling, but I wanted to be the best ! I know now that I’m truly gifted, I studied music and the other guitar players always told me that they were impressed with my skills. And it didn’t change throughout the years.
When I was auditionning for bands, I was always the guy who got the job. But most of the time I was not happy with what I was playing. I wanted more experience to be ”perfect” and to write the ”perfect song”. I didn’t follow completely what my heart was telling me…
25 years later, I’m now recording my first album ! I’m not looking for perfection, I want to get it out as soon as possible ! But I am looking for a few things :
– I must hear well each instrument.
– The feeeling must get through the song and touch the listener.
– And my playing must be great, but not perfect as long as it serves the song well.
So, to all your readers, I’m saying that Graham is right ! Don’t wait like I did, always work hard to get better but don’t let ”perfection” get in the way. It will lead you nowhere. Learn as much as you can from different people, practice, practice, practice and get out there to play live and get your music out !!!
Now, with my album, I play the music I really like. I don’t wait to find the right musicians, I only found a good singer who wants to work with me and I program or play everything else. I am looking for other musicians, but I don’t let it stop me from doing what I really want and what I should be doing for years.
I just hope that my story can help others do the right things now, not 25 years in the future.
Happy Holidays and thanks to Graham to share his thoughts !
Hey Etienne! Man, thanks for sharing your story I identify so much with it, even when I´m not a good guitar player, but I turn 39 in octuber, and I´ve been playing for almost the same period of time like you.
When I was about 14 years old, I used to record and overdub whith two cassette recorders, and my recordings sound very bad, but I was doing what I love; now many years later I have a very decent home recording studio, and every body asks me all the time, hey! can you show us something of your materials? and I have nothing recorded of my inspiration, so I used to feel upset, but hope to change my mindset, and plan to produce at least a 3 or 4 songs EP in the next three months.
When you finish your EP please share it with us here! when I finish I´ll do the same!
Wish you all the best in your music production project!
Mark.
Awesome!
Thanks for yet another inspiring post! I’ve held back for a long time on four songs that I thought just weren’t recorded right, and I stalled progress recently because I didn’t think I could get the vocals right. I’m going to cut those vocal tracks today and tomorrow, and get the album out there before New Years!
Bryan, share your music with us man! would be nice to listen to your music!
This comment is “On Point” Graham. I have much music I have been given
and it’s definitely time to share it with the world at the level it is.
Thanks for summing up my attitude. We are an 80s New Wave band releasing new material that doesn’t have that shiny, over-hyped feel of music today, and that’s fine with us. I may have mixed and mastered our EP ‘in the box’ but our sound comes from our hearts.
Hi Graham,
Just want to thank you for the work you’re doing. You’re a great teacher because you are so passionate about what your doing and want us to make better music. I’m at the point were I enjoy mixing as much as making music! But don’t worry, it’ll come back to normal eventually!
I also appreciate that you openly speak of your faith as a Christian because I do too as a Jehovah’s Witness. I felt the need to write on this blog, because I really think that the sacrifice of Jesus is the most important gift God as given us and that we should talk about it as much as we can.
As you probably know, we (Jehovah’s witness) don’t celebrate Christmas, and I still wonder why most christians choose to celebrate it although it is well known that Jesus was not born on december 25th and that the celebration of christmas has it’s origin in pagan religion.
I know that it’s not the purpose of this blog to talk about religious beliefs, and I totally respect what Christians choose to do or not do at christmas time, but I also feel that it’s important to distance christianity from pagan rites or cult in our christian life.
But anyway, I think we share the same values in life (generosity and family values among others) , and faith is an essential part in our life so it’s just normal for us to talk about it.
I really appreciate your work and I’m waiting for your next post!!!
Thanks
Thanks Martin.
You are absolutely right. Share early and share often. I finally made that jump this Christmas with a free 3 song EP. I’ve gotten some GREAT feedback even though I know the mix is not perfect. The issue I’ve run into is that people are happy to join your Facebook page and like your posts, or follow you on Twitter, but getting them to download your music takes some doing. That’s my next hurdle to jump over. Giving people a reason to download my tracks. Merry Christmas Graham! Thanks for all you do.
Hey Jeffrey share the link to your EP, would like to listen your work! Chears!
“People need your music. They might not know it, but they do.”
Amen to that, Graham! God bless.
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. And yes…share what you have.
Thank you Graham for providing inspiration.
Merry Christmas to all.
A present from me to all of you, far from perfect of course.
oups, I forgot the link :

Thanks unTil Ben! nice music video, interesting version man!, wish you the best too!
Hi Graham
As usual spot on advise aimed directly at me as usual !!!
Thank you for all you have given us over the past year and wishing you and your family a fantastic, relaxing and loving Christmas.
Hey every body! Mark here!
Hey Graham… Man I´m so happy I read this post, I´ve been running like every body with things at work I´m a lawyer and work at my studio (both are in the same office, believe it or not!) in free hours, so I´ve been very busy; I´ve been recording, mixing and mastering almost a song per week for the last two months for a client! so I´m very tired but at the same time very exited because I´ve never done this before to this rithm! Lol!
Reading this post was a true bless; I haven´t consider that music in my life was a gift from God, and because He gave me this gift I just can´t help nothing but to love listening to music, creating music, producing, and mixing music, I can´t run away from music, it was install as factory preset in my soul by God, and you´re right we must share this amazing gift with others; a proof of this was your EP The Tree, I hadn´t before the oportunity to buy it, but last week I bought it and I´ve been listening to it very carefully, and I may say I´ve been bless in many ways by your songs and your music and your teaching! I love your songs, my favorites are One Word, Out of Myself and Terrible Freedom love so badly this songs, Sticks and Stones and The Tree are beautiful songs too.
I´ve been waiting to collect many songs for a LP, but I´m considering seriously to focus on singles or EP´s insted of major productions, so I would not stop music any more; and you´re right my music is not perfect it will never be, but I trully want to share it with the world, so I will intentionaly work in this purpose to realease my music in the coming months.
Man I bless you for being a blessing to all of us, personally I have learn a lot, if not every thing I know about mixing from you, I admire you in every aspect, and you are and example I follow not only in the mixing thing, but in every aspect, your honest, humble, I think you are a very smart guy, and thing God has given wisdom to you, so thank you very much for every thing you have done for us (even when you don´t know us), I wish you the best to you and your loved ones.
Thank you so much for leting us be part of your life and part of the Recording Revolution!
Take care.
Blessings to every one guys!
Mark.
Hey Mark, I’ve been reading some of your comments. Looks like you’re very motivated to start making your own music, and that’s great 🙂
Like you, I recently decided to take that step and, instead of waiting to complete an LP I went for a 5-song-EP. I think it’s the way to go for us independent musicians. For the next one, I’m going with even fewer songs (probably 3), so I can release more often, get feedback, get better, and continue having fun. So I encourage you to keep it up and make that EP, it’s never too late (even for us in our 30’s, LOL). Don’t forget to share!
Godbless, and merry Christmas.
Hey Esli!, man I´m so sorry for replying until today, I don´t know what happen but I didn´t receive your reply in my email, today I was cheking out some other replies and found yours; thank you so much for your kind words and encoragment, I want to share with you that I finished recording all the instruments of my first complete song, right now I´m working in the lyrics and its melodyc line, wich I expect to record next week, and for sure I´ll share it here! I agree with you, and won´t wait until have more songs, I´ll release this one as a single, I don´t want to wait no more for more songs, so I hope to have it done in march.
I think the 30´s it´s a good decade to produce our music!!!! Lol
I´ll keep you on track about my project, thanks again and wish you all the best dear friend!
Mark.
Hi! Mark, thanks for your comment and I’m glad you related to my story. Seems we’re in a similar situation. I’m telling you, start with an EP and you can turn it into a LP later. Start small, but do start something !
I had the same thought this summer when I started recording, do I make an EP or LP ? The answer is difinitively an EP. I have 5 songs, but I’m not done yet. It’s quite a long period of time for only 5 songs. But it’s complicated music. I write progressive metal songs with symphonic orchestra elements to it. So, yes, it’s a lot of work. Drums, guitars, bass, vocals, keyboards and symphonic arrangements with EWQL Symphonic Orechestra Sulver Edition. I do it all by myself. The only real instruments are the guitars and the vocals. I spend a lot of time programming the other instruments.
2 out of 5 songs are completed, leaving me with 3 songs to complete. Why it take me so much time ? Very simple: A good idea that turned out to be bad !
I wanted all the songs to have a similar sound, something you could tell they were recorded as a whole… Sounded good at the time. So I worked ”layer” style. Programming the drums for all the songs first, the bass for all the songs second and so on… The truth is, I got fed up with programming and couldn’t see the end of it. Just for the sake of sounding as a whole.
It’s the first and last time I will work this way ! Next time it’s going to be one song at a time. But, I will do the mixing and mastering to get that ”whole” feel after I record all the songs. Sometimes good ideas are not… I didn’t think about how I would feel about the process. Now I can tell you, it was counter-productive ! Let’s go, do your things and give it to us as fast as you can ! Watch for potential ideas that could turn your fun time into nightmares !
Thanks for sharing Mark. Appreciate you downloading my EP. Excited for your music!
Hi, Graham. Your post was very useful for me, and I would like to share it with my musicians friends and family, but they don’t speak English. I took the time of translate it to Spanish in order to share it with them, but if you’d like to post it in your blog, I can send it to you.
Thanks for everything you share with us,
God Bless you and have a Merry Christmas!
Ahh… If you allow me, I would like to share it in my website in spanish (of course clarifying that you are the author).
Absolutely. Just link back to the original article as well please.
Merry Christmas!
Hi Graham, I felt your post was speaking to me. Thank you. Best wishes for Christmas and beyond.
many thanks for your great advices and Merry Christmas
Wow. Thanks Graham. I needed that. Merry Christmas!
Sorry to interfere here but I am trying to find out what the difference is between rethink mixing and the jumpstart series. Is rethink mixing covering all there is in the jumpstart series, the latter being just more specific and concentrated on the topic it is said to cover? or do i have to buy both video series? I wish to setlle once and for all my mixing problems of my muddy mixes and not find out later, after for instance having bought the rethink mixing that i missed out on capital information in the other series,,, on the other hand I don’t wish to buy twice the same info just dispatched differently. Anyone? Sorry I asked private, but apparently Graham does not have enough time to respond to emails, and I definitely wish to get started. So which video should I buy, or for that matter, buy first.
Hi Scarp – they are two different training series. They compliment each other well. The JumpStart series goes more in depth on EQ, compression, editing, mastering, etc. REthink Mixing is a complete workflow series. You literally watch as I mix a song start to finish and show you everything along the way.
I would start with the JumpStart series if you’re newer to mixing.
Thank you Graham! Merry Christmas and God Bless!
Inspiring, touching and moving.
Deeply grateful.
Carlos from South América
This is article was a very timely for me. My last release was 2007. This Christmas season I took some holidays and finally bore down and finished a four song E.P. I plan on burning 50 copies and giving it to my friends (and the friends they brought with them) that attended my last gig as a way of saying thanks.
Hey! I just discovered your blog about a week ago and I have to say that in the short amount of time I’ve had to check out your posts, I’ve gotten a massive amount of inspiration from what I’ve seen and heard from you. From the uplifting positive advice to the very informative and useful tutorials I can definitely say I’m totally impressed and grateful for the gifts that you have given the world. I’ve been a professional musician/engineer/producer/mixer/dj for about 30 years now and also studied at Berklee and your tutorials are definitely well taught, concise, to the point and full of real world techniques and useful tips that even the most seasoned professional can learn from. Thanks for giving!
Have a great one
Chemo
p.s. if you are interested in checking out some of my latest productions you can find em at http://www.reverbnation.com/djchemo or just google Dj Chemo or C-Saw Records
Thanks so much Chemo!
More philosophical posts, please! I really absorb these into my music mindset, and they’ve helped me tremendously over the last couple years.
Hola Graham, I’m from Colombia, and i wanted to thank you for all the gifts you share, and how you encourage us all to share ours, this article really moved me man, i have been reading your posts and watching your videos and i have learned a lot. given the time ill buy your products that is for sure.
thinking about your article. i wrote a song with a friend of mine and we recorded it at home, back then i didn’t know any thing about producing, we used loops for the music and then we made an animated video. its a really crappy production but the song message was strong and it moved a lot of waves, its interesting because i have gotten crazy jobs out of that song jaja. (as you say: share your gift)
you can check it if you want, and also laugh jeje (its in tune with the colombian reality).
really man thank you for sharing.
Alejandro!
Mark.
Thanks MARK.
That means a lot.
i would like to share with all of you a little bit more of my music, if it is not a problem.
Ah and by the way, Graham you should come to Colombia, and teach a seminar or do some home studio rescue i don’t know, something cool, that will be awesome.

God bless you all.
Just thought I’d share what this post inspired me to get out asap and give to the world. It’s a track that I recorded at home in a day, mixed and mastered it the next day and just kept saying to myself “it doesn’t have to be perfect”. While I’m totally amazed at what came out from a songwriting standpoint I’m not happy with the mix that I did and should have spent at least a few more hours on it. But I’m satisfied and it’s acceptable and I have been getting nothing but positive feedback about it. I also gotta point out that I am not a singer and this is the first time I’ve released anything with me singing on it. Well enough talk, here is the song. Enjoy and let me know what you think. Thanks, Chemo
http://www.reverbnation.com/djchemo/song/22736483-dj-chemo-b-minor-love-major
I want to protect my music from people using it before i get a chance to play live
You have a copyright on your music “upon creation”. Recording a song and releasing it is just further proof of your “creation”. Of course you can copyright your music “officially” as well with the library of congress for instance but with todays digital recording standards it’s easy to prove who recorded a song first if you ever had to in court.
Thank you Graham for the motivation you provide with your advices. You work is the perfect reflection of your words.
In this friendly place I dare share my fresh first EP, 100% homemade. I’m a percussionist who might rely on VST instruments too much. I do hope, thought, that some worthy musical taste lies beyond on the other side of this artificial sound…

Can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been in a business meeting when one of my colleagues points a finger at me and says, “yeah, well this guy plays in a metal band…oh, and plays jazz, too.”
Inevitably, the suits in the room readily admit their love of all things music. Music is such a great communicator. I always chuckle when I see just how many folks in the business world really dig rock, blues, country (big here in Idaho) and to a far smaller extent, jazz (that’s where my heart is). But, guess I’m trying to say is music is indeed, a bridge into an inner space that we celebrate and seem happy to talk about…it brings people together.
Very true.
Yessss. Great, And now a different point of view — the real life.
This article really turns upside down whats going on in the real world if we look what happens arorund us – music is for sale, its a huge industry, many many lawsuits, copyrights, licensing and all things of crap. Still there.
However this article was fun to read becouse it makes copyright obsolete, and hey, what the 3 big music labels know about sharing!? It is just a profit business to them, nothing more. They dont know about god, their only god is money only. They dont know about inspiration of gifts, only thing they talk about is ownership.
ok, thats about labels, now the fellow musicians, and artists…
see that musician still talks about inspiration and sharing, but well, why the album is not also just for free giveaway when its finished?!
SO, in which point takes place the transition when the musician is changed from volunteer to salesman? In other words — that he forgets the talk about inspiration, sharing, gifts, … and puts price sticker on his music?
I know this is an old article, but this is very encouraging to me. My wife and I are worship pastors of a startup Church and combined we have 50 songs fully written with arrangements and everything and 50 songs that are unfinished for several years people keep asking to hear our stuff. I am some what of a perfectionist I want everything to be perfect I want out recordings and mixes to sound professional as I record all the instruments myself I play the keys, acoustic and electric and I either use a drum machine or my dad plays drums. I would end up telling myself all my recordings are nothing but test recordings and for years now I have been doing nothing but “tests” . This challenges me to embrace the imperfections and realize their is actually beauty in my music not being perfectly polished.
Thanks again.
Iused to be able to find good information from your blog posts.
So here’s a track I am sharing on my site from tomorrow. Scars & Stripes.

Inspiring and a bit of ‘ouch’. Merry Christmas Graham I’m thankful for your post.
Graham, thank you for all your ideas and as well this “xmas present” . i wish you merry xmas and happy new year and look forward to news in 2016. TomM
Keep coming back to this one. Thanks again, Graham!
Graham, awesome article!
I do photography more than music and this text applies the same.
Thank you, I was needing this.
I learned so much from your article.Sometimes it seems like there is nobody else that goes through these music related type things.Thank you kindly, Graham.
My pleasure!
