Anything you can do to keep the mix interesting and fresh from section to section, you need to do. That classic “sung through a telephone” style effect is one such technique you can use. It’s so simple to implement and when used sparingly it can be the one thing that keeps the listener’s attention so hopefully they catch the rest of your awesome mix!

Cut The Highs And Lows

Telephone speakers are horrible. They have terrible bass response and the high end is completely missing. So to recreate that effect in your DAW all you really have to do is cut out the highs and lows with an EQ. That’s it!
