How To Make The Hook Of Your Song Pop

2017 Nov 29, 2017

When you’re mixing music, you typically want the hook or chorus of the song to jump out of the speakers.

Some people try to do this by making the hook louder and stacking a bunch of effects on it.

Ironically there’s an easier way to make the chorus or big moment of your song pop and hit harder – simply make the moment BEFORE the hook smaller.

Specifically we can do this in four ways:

1. Remove tracks/parts
2. Make the mix more mono
3. Filter out top and bottom end
4. Add distortion to muffle the sound

The result is a powerful contrast that grabs the listener’s attention. Check out this video for an example of how I pull all 4 of those elements in to make the hook pop!
