Mastering Tips From Engineer And Educator Craig Anderton

2012 Jun 25, 2012

Mastering is an important step in the production and eventual distribution of your music. But so many people are confused about what mastering really is and how to do it well. If you’re brand new to it and want to get started on your own, check out my JumpStart To Mastering video series. But today you should check out what famed mastering engineer and writer/educator Craig Anderton has to say (and show) about mastering your own music. Awesome stuff.

It’s Simpler Than You Think

What I love about Craig’s presentation is that he uses simple stock plugins to do the mastering.  He also drops some helpful nuggets of wisdom along the way, reminding us that small simple tweaks can make a big difference. In the video he explains:

  • How mastering is 90% EQ
  • How to master on headphones
  • A trick to getting loud masters with musicality
  • How a little db change goes a long way

Also, if you’re interested and have gobs of free time, go and stream one of my episodes of the Simply Recording Podcast where we discuss self-mastering, the benefits and the pitfalls. It’s a good listen, I promise.
