Mix With Me: EQ (Part 3 of 6)

2018 Jul 06, 2018

Without EQ, mixing any song would be nearly impossible.

That’s because a good audio engineer can use any basic EQ plugin to tame harsh vocals, boost muffled drums, have an acoustic guitar cut through a heavy rock mix… you name it.

And that’s why it’s the third step in my 8-step mixing process.

And these days, EQ is so much easier to use than in the past. Any basic DAW can bring up a graphic EQ, where you can see the frequencies of the track you’re working on, and play with it to mix it in the best way possible.

Before mixing was digital, you’d be calculating frequencies based on the notes in your track, and tweaking countless knobs to make it right.

Today? It’s as simple as a few clicks, and suddenly, your mix sounds worlds better than it did a second ago.

But then it goes into the specifics. How should you mix drums specifically? Or vocals? Or guitar?

And how do you put it all together?

Well, that’s what part 3 of 6 of the “Mix With Me” series is all about.
