Recording Vocals That Sit Just Right In The Mix (One Song One Month Challenge 4/8)

2016 Jan 14, 2016

Have you ever wondered how to record that perfect, upfront, radio-ready vocal sound without any outboard compression or EQ?

Today, in Part 4 of the One Song One Month Challenge I’m going to show you how to take any simple one microphone + audio interface home studio setup, and leverage the power of your included plugins to craft a mix ready vocal.

This will work for you no matter what microphone, interface, or brand of plugin you use. And it couldn’t be simpler to do.

Where You Should Be After Week 2

If you’ve made it this far – you my friend are amazing. We are two weeks into this 30 day challenge of writing, recording, mixing, and releasing a song to the world. Here’s where your song should be at this stage of the journey:

  • All tracks recorded (including any vocals or percussion)
  • A tight, well constructed arrangement that grabs you as a listener from start to finish
  • All tuning, editing, and comping of tracks completed.
  • If you are using any virtual instruments (or virtual amps) then go ahead and render those down to brand new audio tracks so you can turn off the plugins

Next week we are going to mix this thing! I’ll be showing you some of my favorite tips to get a better mix with less effort. And yes, it’s possible.

For now, let me know something: what is the hardest instrument you’ve ever had to record? Leave a comment below!
